You've hit the nail on the head. The one thing that differentiates them in the market. I saw a tweet that said people could fly another airline if they wanted to pick their seat and a comment said, well you can take your own advice. But ok, what other airline has open seating? None. I LIKE not having to pay extra to pick my favorite seat (usually near the wing because I want a window seat). Like, I'll keep with SWA because they are the only airline that has a direct SAT > MSY route (and vise versa), but their appeal to me is much much less. If I want to pay more to pick a seat, I'll fly Delta! At least they have those crack biscoff cookies.
