If, however, you like romance, check out Courtney Milan. Good to reads, and a great one to follow on Twitter.

The Toast helped me break out of ruts and be less afraid to try new things, to see hope and possibilities, instead of the same old life rolling out before me, even as an old. Found kindred spirits in the electric wonderland of social media and the internet. Prepared me for a wonderful relationship (as in, I gained confidence in what to ask for and had better tools for empathy and compromise).

Things which have occurred in this, my 40th year, for which I'm grateful for Toastie support:
- recognized that it's never to late to start fresh
- quit my long-time, boring, not-a-good-fit job
- went to codeschool
- changed careers
- got a new job in a new town
- sold my house

I'm moving on 7/1 to the new town, to a new house, to a new job. And the Toast won't be there anymore, but it will - in all the people and hearts and minds that I've been lucky enough to meet. So thank you Nicole and Mallory and Nicole and Maria and Toasties themselves.

In response to a lot of the comments and questions in this OT, here is a good local (to Orlando) resource for information and how you can help: http://bungalower.com/2016/06/12/pulse-shooting-l...

It is being updated as new information comes in.

"a willing foe, and sea room" is yay good, but I'd probably go with "Remember that you always have the option to take to the sea"

It's been so long since I've done much web stuff - it's been all iOS for the last few months. And I'm not a big design person - I do the business logic and get someone with actual skill to make things pretty.

On a different (self-promotion, please hire me) note, I am now looking for work as a baby iOS developer. If you know of any leads, please pass on my info, or let me know!

From experience, people would prefer to believe someone is malingering instead of the reality that their experience varies so wildly from another's. It's a terribly thing, having a talk with someone that finally 'gets' you because they just went through the same or similar. You wouldn't wish it on anyone, but that's often the only convincer. It's easy to say, but hard to give no fucks about people that dismiss your experience as nothing. But, in the long run, that's the only thing that's going to get you through. Cut out the people that can't be bothered to at least try to empathize.

I'm free! I'm finally through with codeschool/bootcamp! This means that I have time to actually keep up on an OT again, which means we get to do another #ToastieTwitter #FollowFriday!

Follow someone new here: https://twitter.com/embryoconcepts/lists/toasties

And let me know if you want to be added to the list!

I'm the Lead/Founder for my neighborhood on Nextdoor, so I try to keep the overt nonsense in check. But! I have yet to find a way to get people to start paying attention to their assumptions BEFORE they post. They need to ask themselves if it's a legitimate concern, or their internal bias peeking out. I don't think they can kick me out, but I also don't want to go in swinging and alienate people that can change. It's been a weird line to walk, and feels...really ineffectual.
