Cat Stevens did sing Father and Son though, which also has a somewhat melancholic feeling about one's son growing up!

As a Mandarin speaker, I've always pronounced it something like "loo-tsuh," since that's how the "e" vowel is pronounced. (The "ee" sound would be written with an "i.")

Overall, the monastery feels more like Tibet than China, though, especially since Ludd was given the name "Lobsang," which is a reasonably common Tibetan name.

Yup. Seldom does ROT13-ing a character's name end up fitting them so perfectly...

I think what really gets me- aside from the obvious social conditioning- is wondering just how many humans were originally brought in, if there's still a viable population five thousand years later. Even accounting for a lot of inbreeding, that's a long time to keep a closed population going...

It was actually so horrifying for me, I had to stop watching for a while and find a real dog to cuddle. I don't know why that gag hit me so hard- maybe I just have too much empathy for pumpkin puppies?- but there was something really viscerally disturbing there.

This is the episode that really cemented for me just how much I relate to Pearl. Because Pearl trying to be cool? That's almost exactly how I behave when I'm trying to impress someone, right down to the husky voice and hipster attitude. And the flailing over pretty girls.

This episode inspired one of my favorite Steven Universe shitposts of all time:

“Steven Quartz Universe, you were named after the number of lions I own, which is seven, plus a ’t’ because Greg insisted.”

I feel like capturing the feeling of the original is probably more important than following the actual plot, particularly for that kind of story. And I am [to nobody's shock] a colossal Baccano! fan. So: sold! I'll definitely check it out when I have some free time!
