I had a science teacher in high school who loved 'splody things. He set off the fire alarm more than once.
He also taught a few of us select students how to synthesize LSD. After class, of course. It was legal then.
In another far less entertaining work-related incident, I burned all my chest hair and half my beard off while hot-patching asphalt. We used diesel to soak our shovels in so the asphalt concrete wouldn't stick to it, and light it on fire to break it loose. Then you bang your shovel on the ground, and voila, it's clean. A bunch of burning oil, sand and diesel landed on my jeans about belt level, and poof. I learned not to work without a shirt on.

When I was in class as a first responder for radioactive loads being transported between [WIPP in New Mexico and [Yucca Mountain] in Nevada (through California, for whatever reason) the common "rule of thumb" to measure a safe distance was if you were able to block it with your actual thumb. I approve of this method. Stay the hell away from me.
