The Democratic party was split during the Civil War, according to what I've just found googling. It wasn't like the Democratic party was voting for slavery, (well, I saw one or two laws that are questionable). Also, a woman's right to vote was established by Democrats.

Hmm. As I research more it appears the Republican party was more anti-slavery but not really anti-segregation. The Democrats were not as strongly anti-slavery but in the '60s became the party of African Americans as they led the civil rights movement.

I've never in my life claimed a whole party or even a large minority of the Republican party is anything but homophobic.

The only reason the Republican party hasn't had to deal with the issue of race, gender, religion, etc. is because the Republican party is largely made up of white male Christian men. But I agree with you on the whole Clinton is at least partly succeeding because she is a woman and Obama because he is black.
