Oohhh this reminds me of an interview i had when looking for a graduate position. The interviewer was trying to be genial and put me at my ease and asked what my parents do for work. I looked at him and said "well, they're both dead". The interview didn't go very well after that ...
I must say, when people ask that sort of question I'm always very up front and blunt. Why should I feel uncomfortable? Maybe they will learn to be more thoughtful in future.

I didn't realise that about The Duchess! I was confused by her comment of being honest and not telling the truth. I feel a bit foolish lol

I've had mixed results with author-read audiobooks. One author I listened to was just awful, boring voice and no attempt to differentiate between different characters and the narrator - it was all just her voice. But another author I'm listening to now (Isobelle Carmody reading the Obernewtyn Chronicles) has been great.
If anyone likes the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch (and if you haven't tried them you should! ) then try the audiobook version read Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. He's amazing!
Another thing I've found with audiobooks is that if the author's accent is more familiar to you then it's often more enjoyable. I'm Australian, but there aren't a huge range of books read by Australians. I enjoy readers with the variety of British accents, but it takes me time to get comfortable with an American accented reader.
I think most free Library audiobook services like Over Drive/Libby and BorrowBox offer different speeds now, which is good news for people who prefer those. Personally I like the regular speed because that's how the actor performed it. But I also listen to audio in the car or somewhere i can't normally read so I appreciate getting to read. If i try to listen in a situating where I could read the words myself then i also find it a bit slow.

"Sometimes the gods have no taste at all. They allow sunrises and sunsets in ridiculous pink and blue hues that any professional artist would dismiss as the work of some enthusiastic amateur who’d never looked at a real sunset."

This is so true. Sometimes the sky is such an unlikely bright pink or a gum tree's bark a lurid orange that you think it doesn't look real. If you saw it in a painting it wouldn't look at all realistic - but there it is, existing in the real world.
