I have to agree with you. One gets a sense that if the Shankill Butchers had murdered Jean McConville we wouldn't be hearing so much faux outrage and wringing of hands from unionists. One gets a sense that so many of them have latched on to the terrible murder of this poor woman, not because they give a damn about her or her family but only to have a go at Gerry and Sinn Fein. How sick is that?

It was a very impressive speech and extremely conciliatory.

Of course you could be right and the whole SF thing could backfire on them with the PSNI having something more substantial than dead witnesses that can't be cross-examined at a trial or republicans retracting their original statements and refusing to give evidence.

We can only wait and see...

You really have to despair at the total ineptness of the PSNI. Matt Baggot is to the PSNI as David Moyes was to Man Utd. Likeable enough guy but a bit useless when it comes to tactics. Just last week they were publicly criticised by a judge for their incompetent handling of illegal loyalist marches. Now we have them arresting Gerry. Their first clue should have been Gerry offering to present himself for questioning. Gerry would not have done this unless he knew that he would walk. It was probably Gerry himself who suggested an extension to give time for the mural to be finished as well as time to organise the rapturous hooley that will inevitably come on his release.

Meanwhile Marty is sowing seeds of 'dark forces' and 'political policing' to make sure that the PSNI think twice before arresting any more republicans without stone cold solid evidence.

Sinn Fein are part of the peace process, they have a democratic mandate and therefore every right to be in power if people vote for them but they are also an intelligent, clever and slick PR machine and they will have every possible outcome covered. Gerry will be a hero, the PSNI will once again look inept, Unionism will remain frustrated that Gerry is still on the loose and Sinn Fein will wrap it up at the polling stations.

I'm afraid that seems to be the way of politics here. Robinson threatening to bring down Stormont if he didn't get his way over OTRs and now SF threatening to withdraw support for the police over this issue.

That would be a pretty full plane to Eastern Ukraine.

And thank goodness they did. For Pete's sake, learn to spell especially if you're going to use capitals.

The intellectual 'loony left', ie non-racists, will always win against illiterate racists like yourself. You may not like it but that is reality.

What you really meant to say was, 'I'm a racist and I can't think of an answer so I'll type a stupid reply that will hopefully get me off the hook.' Nigel Farage eat your heart out. ExAllianceVoter (I've never voted Alliance in my life) is on your tail.

It's a well-known fact that racists can't spell. 'carribbean'?

Well call me an old cynic but I don't believe for a second the PSNI will get enough evidence to charge Adams, take him to a trial and get a conviction. Already we have Republicans refusing to give affidavits. So in the next day or so Gerry will be released to a rapturous welcome and many more votes for Sinn Fein in the coming elections.

It's a sad fact that like the victims of the Ballymurphy/Bloody Sunday/Le Mons massacres (and many others), the McConville family may have to come to terms with the reality of never seeing the murderers of their mother tried and convicted.
