http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/ : Gerry Adams arrest: Police granted another two days to question Sinn Fein president over Jean McConv

I have to agree with you. One gets a sense that if the Shankill Butchers had murdered Jean McConville we wouldn't be hearing so much faux outrage and wringing of hands from unionists. One gets a sense that so many of them have latched on to the terrible murder of this poor woman, not because they give a damn about her or her family but only to have a go at Gerry and Sinn Fein. How sick is that?

Of course you could be right and the whole SF thing could backfire on them with the PSNI having something more substantial than dead witnesses that can't be cross-examined at a trial or republicans retracting their original statements and refusing to give evidence. We can only wait and see...

You really have to despair at the total ineptness of the PSNI. Matt Baggot is to the PSNI as David Moyes was to Man Utd. Likeable enough guy but a bit useless when it comes to tactics. Just last week they were publicly criticised by a judge for their incompetent handling of illegal loyalist marches. Now we have them arresting Gerry. Their first clue should have been Gerry offering to present himself for questioning. Gerry would not have done this unless he knew that he would walk. It was probably Gerry himself who suggested an extension to give time for the mural to be finished as well as time to organise the rapturous hooley that will inevitably come on his release. Meanwhile Marty is sowing seeds of 'dark forces' and 'political policing' to make sure that the PSNI think twice before arresting any more republicans without stone cold solid evidence. Sinn Fein are part of the peace process, they have a democratic mandate and therefore every right to be in power if people vote for them but they are also an intelligent, clever and slick PR machine and they will have every possible outcome covered. Gerry will be a hero, the PSNI will once again look inept, Unionism will remain frustrated that Gerry is still on the loose and Sinn Fein will wrap it up at the polling stations.

I'm afraid that seems to be the way of politics here. Robinson threatening to bring down Stormont if he didn't get his way over OTRs and now SF threatening to withdraw support for the police over this issue. That would be a pretty full plane to Eastern Ukraine.

Well call me an old cynic but I don't believe for a second the PSNI will get enough evidence to charge Adams, take him to a trial and get a conviction. Already we have Republicans refusing to give affidavits. So in the next day or so Gerry will be released to a rapturous welcome and many more votes for Sinn Fein in the coming elections. It's a sad fact that like the victims of the Ballymurphy/Bloody Sunday/Le Mons massacres (and many others), the McConville family may have to come to terms with the reality of never seeing the murderers of their mother tried and convicted.

The point is that William Humphrey has criticised this messaging on Black Mountain, not because it scars the countryside and is an environmental eyesore but because it gives out another backward looking message. This from a man celebrating gun-running from one hundred years ago and in a couple of months will be celebrating a battle over 300 years ago. I mean, seriously, you have to laugh at people like Humphrey who couldn't for the life of him see the irony in his words.

On the island of Ireland we have an appalling attitude to animals. For example, dogs by nature, are pack animals yet so many people here leave them alone all day on their own then shout abuse at them for barking or crying. It's not just physical abuse that is the problem but emotional abuse as well. Then there the owners who are on the opposite end of that scale. Under exercising their dogs and overfeeding them on food meant for humans that make their dogs obese and unhealthy. Seeing these dogs barely able to waddle on a walk is also abusive and quite distressing to watch. Usually their owners are also waddley obese people. Dogs are not humans. They have their own needs regarding their physical and emotional welfare and far too many dog owners never take the time to research those specific needs.

I would prefer if this didn't happen and I commend SF for condemning it but let's get real here. Our towns and communities are scarred with disrespectful tattered and torn union flags, murals of paramilitaries, twaddle camps, antisocial behaviour from bandsmen, rioting and attacks on police by the OO and their cohorts, celebrations for gun-running etc, etc. Yet messages on Black Mountain is where Humphrey and his DUP mates draw a line. This is exactly why the DUP and their mates no longer have credibility here or in the rest of the UK and are constantly ridiculed by the rest of the world. Their hypocrisy, though expected, is just a joke.

Hi Ox. Most normal people who live here, regardless of religion or politics, wouldn't dream of buying a house where they have flegs, bunting or fleg-painted kerbstones and roundabouts. The vast majority of Protestant/Catholics, Nationalist/Unionists do not want these repulsive symbols of 'territory' in their environment yet our police force, councils and political representatives do absolutely nothing to confront it. We need to stop being afraid to challenge them but that means we need support for our communities to be heard.
