The problem was that the writers completely shut down the Robin/Ted angle and there was no other way to make them happen than to kill the mother. Unfortunately it comes off as "I'm glad your mother died so I can be with Robin". Not to mention that Robin is a terrible match for Ted who is much needier than Barney.
