Husker: The appearance of attempted trickery doesn’t necessarily make it so. I see that Jackson County is going to investigate the matter. I don’t think whether what Joe did is legal or illegal is the real issue here. I think the more important issue is the humiliation of a public official. Joe may not deserve the humiliation, but that doesn’t matter much. He has it and it may not go away even if we hear from the Jackson County District Attorney that there are no charges. If Jackson County files charges, we will have a different story.

I believe the accusations of verbal abuse have been affirmed by the dismissal of Hall’s complaint. I believe the dismissal by the Circuit Court has been affirmed by the Court of Appeals. I think the issue still alive is about Douglas County being awarded attorney fees. I would have to read the cases to be completely sure about this. Perhaps you might want to read the cases too.

Husker: There isn’t any impersonation or trickery here or any violation of anyone’s civil rights. Mr. Hall knew Joe and knew that he was a commissioner. According to the Beacon article, Hall had an accurate opinion of the authority granted by a special deputy badge.

As for the issue of commissioners and county vehicles, I agree with a couple posters here. My Father worked for the county for many years. He was encouraged to drive a county vehicle, but he refused the offer. When he had to drive somewhere on county business, he drove his own car and charged the county mileage. __

Husker: I don’t think there is anything illegal about Joe showing his badge. The badge was genuine. It was expired, but Joe didn’t know that. I’ve seen the badge and I didn’t see anything on it where it says don’t show anyone this badge. Joe can’t be legally punished for his actions, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t getting spanked. About everyone I know is laughing their heads off and calling Joe Boss Haug or Barney Fife. Being the butt of big bellied sheriff jokes has got to sting.

I suppose we have to assign considerable credibility to Hall’s opinion of what constitutes threatening behavior. He should know about that. Mr. Hall was accused of threatening and harassing his co-workers before he was fired as a supervisor for the Douglas County Juvenile Department: Douglas County Circuit Court 04CV1737CC A131405

The Ryan budget is going nowhere for now, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore it. We should view it as a warning of what all but four of the house republican representatives have in mind. They want to end Medicare, so they can cut the top tax rate for wealthy Americans from 35 to 25%. It appears that the r’s are out to redistribute the nations wealth to benefit the rich.

Yes, I believe it is inequitable for medical marijuana users to be singled out and denied concealed weapons permit. We should cure the inequity by denying concealed weapons to everyone except the police.

Mr. Meng needs a nice long rest in the penitentiary to cool off. I'd say about 10 years should do it.

Fixing SS for the future is easy. Just raise the cut off point for the tax. Wealthy Americans pay a much smaller rate than the poor or middle class for SS. For the very wealthy, the tax is almost zero per cent. There is a lot of room at the top for generating revenues. The top tax rate is about half now of what it was during our greatest economic expansion in the years before 1980. Guaranteeing Medicare for the future by increasing the tax by 1% is reasonable too. We shouldn’t be complaining about a 1% tax increase, we should be thankful we are living longer.

Blue and Buzz: My crime in school was being chatty and social at the wrong time in class. I got whacked on the head with a pencil or a book a couple times and hit with a paddle and a tennis shoe by other teachers over the years, but it was the way things were then and at least some of the other kids got the whacks as much or more than me. I didn’t feel singled out or terrorized.

The big punch had a very bad effect on me. I wish I had asked for help in dealing with it instead of thinking I had to handle it on my own. I should have gone directly to the principal’s office and asked him to call my parents and the police. During that time, I doubt if there would have been any legal consequences for the teacher, but at least the incident would have been on the record.

Buzz, I don’t think we should be bringing in other factors involving mouthy, belligerent or threatening behavior by kids. I don’t think they apply. If there is evidence that the teacher hit the kid, he should suffer the consequences. Teachers restrain out of control kids. They don’t hit them.
