Hi Echo, I checked out California Natural and some of their products fit the bill. But Healthwise has chicken meal as the first ingredient so it won't be going on my preferred list. I'm sure it's fine though - it looks like the ingredients are all good.

I posted on July 17th about a possible problem with Nutro's Natures Choice brand and 6 dogs that died suddenly after eating it. Nutro apparently refused to look into the matter when approached by the pet's owners. Checking their ingredients, I don't find any of their brands that qualify for my list because they all start with "meal." I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the first ingredient being "meal" but for my preferred nutrition list, it must be meat, not meal., as I explained in my post

Cats - please check the specifics of Whiskas and consider a food change for your health - Their dry food's 1st ingredient is corn, followed by chicken by-product meal, then corn gluten meal. Even their moist food packets first ingredient is water, followed by meat by product, and wheat gluten. Cats should not eat grains and corn is the worst by far. They need meat as the main ingredient, and Whiskas definitely doesn't qualify for my list.

Thanks Natasha, I have checked out California Naturals and see that their canned foods all meet the criteria, along with some of their dry formulas, so I'll add them as well to my list.

You're being a conscientious, loving mother, the way it ought to be. I feel so sorry for these kids born to less caring parents. I forget what part of Michigan it was, may have been the Detroit area - our local news sometimes covers their stuff. Thanks for stopping by Jen

Blue Buffalo Co is an excellent brand and is on the top 10 list of best dog food (kibble) that I received a while back in a newsletter- the list showed companies whose food met the writers standards for high real meat content, no byproducts, chemicals, etc. If I were you, I'd stop feeding the Nutro until more is known about this suspected problem. Nutro was not on the top 10 list of foods. And I will let you know if I hear anything else, plus I will post about it. thanks for stopping by Tricia, and I'm sorry to hear about your pup's stomach problems. It's upsetting when our babies aren't doing well.
