super tardy to this party but just wanted to comment on this:

For me, that kind of makes the transgressions on BtvS worse. AtS has severe issues with women (ie: mystical pregnancies, fridging), but the show also never painted itself as the paragon of all things feminist, which is still BtVS' reputation. It's just something that will always rub me the wrong way. It's okay to like problematic things. I love problematic things! We just have to acknowledge the issues and treat them with respect. BtVS claims to be about female empowerment, claims to be progressive, and fails time and time again. I mean, the show ends with her activating all the slayers when it's coded as a violation in “Get It Done.” Her last word on the show is Spike's name.

AtS is bad with women, but never claims to be good with them. BtVS is bad with women, and still maintains a feminist reputation. Which is just something that I'm really uncomfortable with.

I guess the bottom line is that Joss Whedon sucks and all his female characters need to be hidden far, far away from him

oh there was serious drama behind the scenes. to summarize in a non-spoilery way, her pregnancy during the fourth season seriously altered the storyline, and joss was not too happy. she starts around 5:00. she's super straight forward and honest about it. can't embed for some reason, but here's the link. I kinda file this under the "Well, they can't all be winners" episode category. Not offensively bad, but just kind of...there. And oh my god, reading an Angel review is so refreshing after the gigantic shit show that was the last two days. Like I actually think I appreciate the episode a little bit more. Even the teddy bear!
