According to an AP report released yesterday (2007) , the CIA has finally released the "Family Jewels" report. The internal memo details 25 years of illegal and illicit activities by the government agency, including hiring a member of the mafia to assassinate Cuban leader Fidel Castro and spying on journalists and dissidents throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s. The report was released to The National Security Archive a full 15 years after it filed its freedom of information request for the documents.

The effects of the facts confirmed in this report are far-reaching for those of us who continue to disagree with the government's policies. The fact that the CIA did in fact hire criminals to take out foreign leaders lends credence to the many theories circulating about Kennedy's assassination. Also, in our modern day and age, the government continues to unscrupulously seek new ways to invade the citizens' privacy. They don't even try to hide the fact that they listen in on phone calls and read emails. The fact that the CIA was engaging in such tactics over 25 years ago supports the idea that we have been living in surveillance state for longer than anyone would like to admit.
