Maybe this article should also mention the "Windy Wing" and "Summer Wing" ponies. http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Category:Summerwing_...

They never appeared on the show but are quite popular and also had merchandise based on them. They were the same size as baby ponies and had big butterfly wings.

Also during G2 all the "winged" ponies (who were often also unicorns. Making them some kind of alicorn?) had butterfly shaped wings.

The question is not what a princess is. The question is why the writers can't be bothered to actually do something with it.
If they wanted the princess status thing to be fully ignored in every way (like they are doing now) they could have just used something like an "incognito spell" or something. Something that would help Twilight seem like just a regular unicorn and help her mingle in the crowd.
They could have made an episode about that. Twilight not being able to handle all the attention and all that.

People can come up with a ton of excuses but none of them really make sense. At this point she is one of only four alicorns.
She is considered to be one of the rarest and most powerful ponies out there...that at least should turn some heads...
