And they left out the Scouring of the Shire completely. That was my very favorite part of the whole story, when the Hobbits got to come into their own. Through most of the story they were always backed up by powerful people, someone was there to save them, or on their way to do so. But they had to retake the Shire on their own. It was like a coming of age tale for an entire race. And apparently the death of a Maia doesn't make the cut into the movies, but Frodo and Sam going through the Battle of Osgiliath (which they were NOT at) needed some airtime.
