And here's the book that I read recently with the mention of the commercial fishermen who I was speculating about: Fish on Friday: feasting, fasting, and the discovery of the New World, by Brian M. Fagan

It's a very readable history of the Atlantic cod fishery.

I like it:). We're coming in at two different points of time -- and at slightly varying angles (dare I say non-Euclidean, alien angles :), but this could be interesting to expand upon for a bit.

Oooh! I had to think a bit, but here goes:) The commercial fishermen who were definitely *not* liked by the godly elect of the colonial Establishment turn to the Elder Gods for aid and abetment.

Extra points if I can massage the timeline so that the Elder Gods devour Cotton Mather and his ilk:)
