My favourite minimal pair is "thy thigh". The distinction between voiced and unvoiced th is also what makes "mouths" an irregular plural.

Probably because t is devoiced, it inclines you to also devoice the s. Assimilation is common in phonology.

Okay. I didn't really read the post, since it's going over a series I've not yet read. That's why I asked what's next. I have now glanced over the post, and I see that the plate's clear for now. Fair enough. That makes sense. Hope it's mostly the good kind of busy, Mark. Look after yourself.

I fully intended to stick with this community after Discworld. I ordered these books from a local bookshop. Unfortunately, they took ages to arrive, and by the time they did, you were already more than half way through them. And then I went into a brief depressive spiral and stopped reading for a bit (I seem to be pulling out of it again now, thank goodness). I will read them in time, and probably will read along with your archives, but I missed the real-time interaction. A pity.

So, what's next? Maybe I'll join in this time.

This is about Small Gods specifically, but some of the things that Jill Bearup says about Discworld and Pratchett in general toward the end are very insightful, and also made me cry.

It's been such a treat to be part of this. And to watch you become a fan. You embrace so much your identity as a first-time, unprepared reader, that sometimes I've been caught off guard when you say something that shows how knowledgeable you are about the series, and then I have to remind myself: Oh yeah, Mark's read most of the books (all of the books, now). And read them closely. Of course he's knowledgeable.

So here's a question, if you were, at some point, to reread Discworld, what order would you do it in? (I've always done it fairly haphazardly, myself.)

And finally, a fic rec: Modern Love, by Penknife.

Thanks again.

The references here seemed to me somewhat more heavy-handed than is Pratchett's wont, but I'd find it difficult to put my finger on exactly what I mean by that.

Of course, last time the elves tried something in Lancre, the wizards were around to help out, though they weren't all that helpful.

Magrat is about as far from the stereotypical depiction of a witch queen as you could possibly imagine, but she is undeniably a witch, and undeniably a queen. And she's good at both roles, from what we see here. She's the perfect person to talk to Letitia.

“You call yourself some kind of goddess and you know nothing, madam, nothing. What don't die can't live. What don't live can't change. What don't change can't learn. The smallest creature that dies in the grass knows more than you.”

Nightshade is beginning, perhaps, to learn.
