There are terrible stories coming out of this. I haven’t heard the interview but was reading some of the WSJ series on same. Terrible deeds or turning a cold dark shoulder to human suffering.

That’s good to know. The two Juilliard cellists I’ve met don’t even live in NYC. They just bring them in on the weekends. No real connection with the community or with NYC at all. Prestige only works to a point.

Yeah she is. Her grandfather was an amazing cellist for sure! So stoic and fluid at the same time.

I switched my son over to another new cello teacher! It was not easy as the first new teacher (recommended by an instructor at Juilliard) we tried didn’t work out. He was a great teacher but was such a bad communicator and made so little effort to plan new lessons I gave up. His apartment in the upper west side was filled with piles of music, two cellos and bottles of scotch in the corner. Makes for a great short story but not reliable to teach an 11 year old. The new new teacher is at the Manhattan School of Music and worked with jr. in an ensemble group over the summer. He was so excited about working with jr. he wrote us a long email about how great he thinks he is and how much potential he has. Was exactly what a parent wants to hear and completely unsolicited. They are meeting twice a week and he will do a lot of other performance and chamber work with him as well. It’s great. The other Juliard-recommended teacher still hasn’t replied to emails about how much money I owe him. So bizarre. I’m thinking about just sending a couple of bottles of good scotch and say thanks but no thanks.

The dynamic between Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music is interesting and a history I knew nothing about. Learned about MSM from listening to an interview with the experimental cellist Marika Hughes who went to both schools and said that MSM was a much cooler place than Juilliard. Was the reason I sent him there this summer and they ended up basically finding him. A really cool thing to experience. This is an interview with Hughes that put me onto them. My wife initially tried to get her as a teacher but she doesn’t teach any more. Anyhoo. A winding path to get on the right path!

We had to pay $5000 last year because Kitty ate an entire spool of metallic thread. There went most of our tax return the little monster.

Hope Kitteh feels better

That’s odd. Someone should have told them to stop that. And/or complained to management. A fancy car doesn’t mean you can be an asshole

My parents took me to see Saturday Night Fever when it came out. 😬 They had no idea.

They are a forgotten treasure and are still all around. My wife just found one for her brother in Oklahoma so he and his daughter can see it.
