I hope this is helpful to most of the folks who read it. My problem, however, is that part of my brain just shuts off in social situations, and I can't think of a single thing to say, never mind a segue ("Hey, that reminds me of...")

I do best in gatherings that are around an activity - foosball, say - or a shared interest, like the Game of Thrones night at the local.

Not being a wise guy here, but if everything you like to do is solitary, and you don't want a relationship, just sex, maybe...visit a sex worker? Seriously. Nobody's feelings get hurt, she gets what she wants, you get what you want.

I think clubs are a TERRIBLE place to meet people. Great for dancing, terrible for meeting. It's too loud to talk, and nothing to talk about.
Is there maybe a pub near you that has a trivia night?

I think the doc was to hard on the husband. I have a lot of sympathy for the LW - this sucks - but she wants him to want her, and that is a thing he just can. not. do. He can't help it, he just doesn't have those feelings. It's not wrong to want that, but she's not going to get it, not from him., because he can't.

A quick thought on settling: no matter how sweet, funny, curious, sexy, or whatever the person in front of you is, you can always IMAGINE somebody sweeter or funnier or whatever. And out of seven billion people there probably really is someone a bit more perfect than this person. So no matter who you are with, you are always settling for them, and they for you. You either settle, or you stay alone; and being alone is a kind of settling, too, if it's not what you were hoping for.
