I don't think the "how much" actually matters to Pasco as much as the fact that he's getting paid for dancing. Just like a real, i.e. professional, dancer.

Surely the order in which books were written and published can't be a spoiler?

My stepfather just called to tell me a short while ago. :( I came here first thing, but of course people were already posting about it.

Man, this is my first comment in over a year and a half. I... didn't plan for it to be quite like this.

You're not being silly, I actually noticed the same thing. I agree that the artists probably thought "Spear = throwing weapon" and didn't even notice how that assumption was directly contradicted by the text.

Huh. It figures you posted a cover post as I was putting mine together. But where did you find that last Liselotte Watkins cover? It's quite different from the one I found on Tammy's website - you can see that one in my post below - and I like it much more.

OK, we've now read through Chapter 7, so it's Cover Round-Up Time!

First things first: The original US cover art, by Joyce Patti, used for both Random House's 2000 hardcover and 2001 paperback:

This is obviously the artist's take on the scene we just read, and it's very true to the text, except for one detail: Jump is supposed to be growling with a blood-stained muzzle, and he's not. Jump himself is drawn very accurately, though, down to the twice-broken tail.

The first UK edition used different art, but depicting the same scene:

I think Jump actually looks appropriately terrifying in this one, although the artist still shied away from depicting him with a bloody muzzle.

The US paperback reissue cover:

I dislike this whole series of covers, which looks as though some amateur slapped it together in PhotoShop. However, I may be in the minority; I've seen other fans say they love it.

The UK 2004 paperback reissue:

It's part of a reissue of all of Tamora Pierce's books (that were out in 2004) with the same style of cover art. I like the style, but I would like this cover much more if the artist had made some effort to draw a sparrow that looks like a sparrow. This one just looks like Kel's holding a slightly squashed blackbird.

Yeah, I'm waiting until Chapter 7 to do a proper Cover Round-Up. Although if someone can crop a cover image to just show Jump standing between Kel's feet, we could post that, couldn't we?

Yes, the original cover art for Page definitely features a bull terrier, and it definitely looks like the artist did her research as well actually read the actual book. That's why I love the Joyce Patti cover art so much.

DRM-free? Maybe? Damn, I guess there's no chance a major publisher will let us have DRM-free e-books. [Deep sigh.] But I live in hope...
