My house lost our dog (a golden retriever rescue) and a cat (tuxedo shorthair, had him so long I don't remember where we got him; shelter probably) in less than a week. Dog to cancer, and in all the fuss we didn't notice that the cat had an inflamed jaw. By the time we did notice there was nothing we could do beyond having his lower jaw removed, and went with the kinder route and put him to sleep.
