Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry to hear that Liz. :( My house lost our dog (a golden retriever rescue) and a cat (tuxedo shorthair, had him so long I don't remember where we got him; shelter probably) in less than a week. Dog to cancer, and in all the fuss we didn't notice that the cat had an inflamed jaw. By the time we did notice there was nothing we could do beyond having his lower jaw removed, and went with the kinder route and put him to sleep.

But can an event be its own cause? Such as remembering when I was in a car crash as a young child and being saved by a stranger, building a time machine to go back to find that stranger and thank him, and save my younger self from the wreck. Read the Thursday Next novels sometime. Jasper Fford plays with literature like the rest of us play with clay. Instead of ripping the plays off someone else, he never wrote them at all (defying causality), so a time traveler went back and gave them to him (and he started writing more, violating causality again).
