Holy shit, thank you for linking this. I'm bawling uncontrollably, what an amazing performance. To use a phrase from YOI: I couldn't look away.

I don't have much else to add that hasn't already been said, but I'm surprised that nobody's commented on the episode title puns! They're fun little tidbits. I think there are more in other episodes, but with my limited Japanese, I can pick out the China and Russia ones! They sadly don't translate at all into English since the play on words doesn't work, but I'll do my best.

"The Horror!" comes from a play on words between Russia and horror/terrifying. "The horror!" is "Osoroshiya," while Russia in Japanese is said as "Roshia." The way that "The horror!" is written in these two episode titles is in fact *not* the typical "Osoroshiya" but "Oso-ROSHIA." There's no way to really make the punny connection in English between Russia and Terrifying, so I understand why the translators went with a literal translation, but it makes me sad that this little gem gets lost.

Similarly, "China's On!" is also a play on words. The word used in the title Japanese here is actually "Yacchaina!" which is basically "Let's do it!" but then the way the characters are written make it clear that the "chaina" of "yacchaina!" here is meant to be read as "China" rather than the typical "Let's do it" translation. So I feel like "China's on!" keeps the spirit of that pun.

I know there are some others floating around, so if anyone wants to chime in with them, please do! I love discussing language and wordplay/translations, especially in this series, and everyone else has already contributed such amazing write-ups I almost feel like I don't really have anything else of value to contribute, haha!

Re: JJ, I actually weirdly appreciate how much this show goes out of it's way to avoid stereotypes sometimes. It would've been so easy to make Leo the American Skater some arrogant blond blue-eyed white boy as they're often portrayed in anime, and the Canadian as polite and mild, but... instead they do... NOT that?? The American skater is Latinx, as is his coach, which is rare enough in anime as it is, but also he's nice and gets along well with people! And then it's the Canadian skater who's the hilarious over-the-top dudebro. Also, JJ will never not be the worst, but he kind of grows on you. Like a fungus,
