I too was surprised to read the Pope met in secret with a non-Catholic who was incarcerated for contempt of a lawful order by a Catholic Federal judge. I do not share Jack's view that it sounded about right for the Pope to meet her. I cannot speak to Jack's statement about so many atheist sites reporting on this issue because I only look at a couple sites. However, it does strike me as something reportable, particularly in view of the Liberty Counsel story that the meeting was in private.

As far as I can tell, later news suggested a private meeting did not occur.

Forgive me for reiterating, but this get's to the issue I raised of helicopter parenting and every kid is a star. How DARE you challenge my child.

I lay blame on my generation of parents, and I include myself in this assessment, who espoused everyone is a winner, everyone gets a trophy, which leads to everyone's opinion is just as good if not better than anyone else's, everyone is from Lake Wobegon (above average - or way above average), and so on among a host of other things I could add. With that training ground it is no surprise that some young adults believe that whatever they believe is beyond discussion.

I cannot vouch for this book in its totality, but I can say that many passages resonated with me: Generation Me by Jean Twenge, Ph.D. Your mileage may vary.

While I don't think it will be a problem to shop for young kids or grandchildren, my reaction to this is like yours - it is ok to use gender labels for children, teens, adults. My question is: why did Target do this? Some sort of perceived political correctness? Did they do surveys and customers wanted this?

"The term social justice warrior is not easy to define in a concise way."

Sure there is. ;-)

I see no problem with his thesis because there are all different flavors of Christianity. One sect's basic tenet may not be another sect's basic tenet.

Along those tribal thought lines, I wonder how much happiness for many people comes from being in a group and the interactions with the group, not from a given belief system per se. (a sense of community)

To me there is a fairly large difference between an instinctive impulse to potential lethal danger versus an initial reaction to ideas.
