Powerful post. Congratulations Edward. I wish we have this kind of substance/analysis more often HERE.
With all respect I digress with 2 things:
1- Nokia will be a big success. The 40% leftover market share LOOOOVES Nokia as a cult and will follow up to the end. (good end) and because WP7 is a REALLY good OS and it will improve even more.
2- China will buy Nokia?? Big Possibility BUT not because Nokia would fail (they won't) but because China is becoming such a RICH $$$ country that it's scary. Soon they will be able to buy the whole Europe. (Real Estate) if they wanted.

"They don't care about dual core or HTML" You hit the nail on the head.

It's the eternal benefits vs features. People buy emotionally but justify it logically. The decision maker is Feelings: How do you FEEL with the features of a product. The iphone ads you inserted here are a perfect example. Let's watch and listen carefully to the emotional words (in Caps). In all the 4 ads He is talking about his life not about the phone:
1-His wife WANTS a coffe maker. her sister LIKES red. It happens that they used "A phone" to acomplish that. it could be any phone.
2-He is EXCITED about the trip preparations not about the phone. Of course the phone helped.
3-They WANT a dog. The dog becomes PART of the FAMILY. Not the Phone. The phone just helped.
4-He is a FAMILY MAN, Gramma LOVE to see his kids. It's NOT about how many mpix the iPhone has.

Bottom line, emotional feelings are at the forefront of these ads and the features are persived through the subconcious mind. I wish I could be that creative. Like they said "I don't need to be be a cook to know the soup tastes great."
Hope this help our creative people to come out with what MS hasn't been able to do.

Rush, That's a great idea. I follow you and love your contributions BUT with all respect I hope MS doesn't follow your guidelines. You are a geek, I'm a geek. We are the worst marketers. For us is hard to understand but people don't buy features, people buy emotionaly!! That's Professional SALES 101.

Haven't we learn from Steve Jobs? he sold the millions of his first phone with a FEATURELESS phone! He appeals to the emotions. He knows Marketing. We don't. MS doesn't either.

You are absolutely right. It´s It´s impossible to have an intelligent discussion with you when your best argument for your case is to call other people´s opinion dumb, remove your question, disregard what others think and finalize with a "...make no sense to me".

WOW! That´s a lot of contribution to a discussion that for others is not dumb.
Sorry for my interruption. Let´s continue with the topic.

Let's agree that we disagree in strategies.
Can we agree that the ONLY thing that counts is RESULTS? Can we agree that people buy emotionally and justify the purchase logically?
Without going into my background if I don't bring results my company would fire me regardless of my startegy.
We are geeks. We love features. The rest of the world (99% buyers) aren't geeks and they love a benefit that make them feel good and happy and accepted. That works! Why Can't we learn from iPone and Android?
Number one is what makes WP7 different!!! the hubs!
Showing the negatives of others doesn't work to convert fanboys particulary in that ad with a generic phone.
Showing people using the phone? not enough. Showing people using the hubs is Ok.
But showing people feeling excitment when using the Hubs plus others feeling envy that you have one... that's emotional... that sells.
Then you explain to your wife why you spent $600 in phone using LOGIC. (features, megas, mghz etc)

RESULTS! that's what count.. Strategies are right when they get results. At launching Androids and iPhones got results they target People's Emotions" and had a Clear message so they sold millions in the first few weeks.

WP7 had almost a year in advance, they have multiple manufactures, dozens of models for every taste, we have already 3 months into the lauching and still I don't see the numbers the competence did.

Strategies? They blew it with the "REALLY?" commercials series. Good commercials BUT they lacked clarity, In the ad It seems people love their phone, they are so concentrated on it, it must be good. So the viewer's mind want that phone. Unfortunally iit is not a WP7.

I really hope they win people's heart this time. Then will be easy to win their minds.

I´m not impatient. It just goes beyond my comprehension, how multimillios dollar advertisement agencies, ignore the most simple basics of marketing: BENEFITS BEFORE FEATURES. The public don´t buy anything because how many buttons or megas something has. Their ego goes first: How they feel. Don´t believe me? ask Steve Jobs how he sold millions of iphones, lacking the most simple features.

So I´m glad that they are waking up.this ad makes people feel something about Windows Phone.

Very simple! WP7 is a new generation, everything else WM6, iPhone, android, blackberrys, palms are previous generation. That was an old generation that was app centered.

WP7 is a new approach! It is a YOU centered, OS Upgrades will never catch up. They have to start fresh.
