You could try Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings; I've had this problem before, it's usually a carrier problem.

What I want to know is, will there be a pwnagetool for old bootROM 3GS users like me for 4.2.1 . I have the very old baseband 5.11.07 and would like to remain at that old baseband when upgrading to 4.2.1 .

If you know how to revert to 3.1.3, do so with SHSHs. If you'd like to be on 4.0, you can do that as long as you have SHSH for 4.0/4.0.1 . I highly recommend that you restore to 4.0.1 (if you can) and wait for pwnage tool to make a custom firmware for your 3GS.

Unfortunately you updated yourself to a baseband firmware that cannot be unlocked. In the future, do not update until you know 100% that you're not upgrading your baseband. There is an unlock in the works, but will not be out until atleast 4.2 . On a note if you'd like to jailbreak now though you can use limera1n, just follow the instructions in the program (Windows only right now).

If you try limera1n, make sure you have SHSH saved for 4.0.2, otherwise if you ever need to restore you'll be SOL because you'd need to wait for pwnage tool to restore to a custom 4.0.2 again.

download SBsettings and "respring" from the BigBoss repo from Cydia, let the device respring, swipe the status bar, press the power button on the UI that comes down, then select "safe mode", use the app, then hit the respring icon on the springboard to get back to normal

if the wifi doesn't work, either restore or take the ipod do a Genius bar at an apple store, they should fix it

but for the basic, untrained user, no, the jailbreak isn't worth it without wifi

download SBsettings from Cydia > wait for respring > swipe the status bar > press the power button > choose safe mode from the list that shows up

To exit safe mode either respring, or shut off and turn back on the device.

I recommend downloadin' "respring" from Cydia aswell; from the springboard homescreen, take the respring button and the device should leave safe mode.

Simply run in safe mode when you wanna use Skype. Saurik used to have a post in Cydia about problems with Skype; it'd be a good try to find any answers on is site(s).
