Take just one Western constitutional monarchy, Britain. In several opinion polls there over the last 20 odd years, between 18 and nearly 30% of citizens have said that they think the monarchy should be abolished and replaced by a republic. It is a subject that is often openly debated. I suspect that a similar situation occurs in many other European monarchies......
So, wondering if Ibrahim was director general of immigration in the UK, WOW! He would be a busy man! Millions of citizens to arrest and deport for the horrendous, seditious crime of being anti-monarchy! What a farce!

Come on now Khairy, what you really mean is it could well be doom for UMNO without the sedition act.

Liberalism: "A political theory founded on the natural goodness of humans and the autonomy of the individual and favoring civil and political liberties, government by law with the consent of the governed, and protection from arbitrary authority". Just one of many typical dictionary definitions.

Brilliant, by stating that "liberalism" is UMNO's biggest threat, it seems that Muhyiddin has honestly and perhaps unintentionally defined what UMNO is. None of the above presumably?

11 years ago @ The Malaysian Insider - Taib takes legal actio... · 0 replies · +13 points

I find it interesting and more than a little amusing that Taib's lawyers, Mishcon de Reya themselves publicly list and repeat all the things that this book has accused Taib of. More usually in this sort of situation, lawyers would simply state that their client has been libelled, WITHOUT repeating the alleged libel in considerable detail. Their phrase "cause colossal and irreversible harm to our client's reputation" seems amusingly overblown too. It is almost as though even they are not taking their client Taib very seriously? Masters of sarcasm?

IGP to Interpol: "I say can you arrest these two blighters and send them home, hardened criminals, don't you know."
Interpol to IGP: "But what are they accused of precisely?"
IGP to Interpol: "Sedition and posting bad photos on face book."
Interpol to IGP: " What?"
IGP to Interpol: "Well, criticising a member of the royalty, and posting photos of eating pork and other disgusting and thoroughly naughty images!"
Interpol to IGP (becoming more puzzled and slightly exasperated): "Yes, but what serious crimes are they accused of?"
IGP to Interpol: "Precisely, very serious crimes indeed!"
Interpol to IGP: CLICK.......Burrrrrrr "Please leave a message after the tone".

Alas the government does not even treat adults like adults, so what chance for students? How often do we hear phrases such as "people could easily become confused" or "people should be grateful" from the government, when people want free, open, debate or when people question the government.

Alas "Malaya"s comment illustrates the fact that to some Malaysians, one does not, question, debate, think freely, voice varied opinions, etc, etc. But rather one blindly, gratefully, humbly, unquestioningly accepts the edicts, opinions and dogma of BN.
Why? Because people will become easily confused, it is sensitive, it is the social conditions, it is not part of traditional Malay culture, etc, etc. Dr. Mahathir developed and perfected this theory and wow, it is a great way to control people.
True, but it is also patronising, treats Malaysian adults like small children and hinders the development of Malaysian society and the normal, natural evolution of the country's culture.
Malaysians deserve better than this, and need to be allowed to develop, as in any other country. 2020 anybody?

11 years ago @ The Malaysian Insider - Social contract a form... · 0 replies · +11 points

Sounds like a contradiction to me. The social contract is "not biased towards Malays" says Datuk Abdullah. Then in his next breath he adds, "Malays may have their privileges".
Oxford Dictionary definition of the word privilege......'a special right, advantage'. Merriam Webster Dictionary definition of the word privilege.....'a right or benefit that is given to some people and not to others'.
Well that seems quite clear to me.

Drop just the word Christian from Rahman's diatribe, and it starts sound distinctly like the sort of nonsense that Adolf Hitler used to spout.........

The police have a duty to assure the safety of all those who are in their custody. Here they appear to have failed comprehensively. Further, from the details they give their failure looks: incomprehensible, careless in the extreme, unprofessional, possibly criminal (though that is for the AG to speculate upon). Adding that the victim had "eight criminal records" ?!?! is not relevant... And I assume that they meant he had a criminal record of eight offences, perhaps a mere detail, but one would expect the police to be absolutely accurate in such details.
