The Malaysian Insider : Putrajaya revokes passports of Alvin Tan, Ali Abd Jalil - The Malaysian Insider

Take just one Western constitutional monarchy, Britain. In several opinion polls there over the last 20 odd years, between 18 and nearly 30% of citizens have said that they think the monarchy should be abolished and replaced by a republic. It is a subject that is often openly debated. I suspect that a similar situation occurs in many other European monarchies...... So, wondering if Ibrahim was director general of immigration in the UK, WOW! He would be a busy man! Millions of citizens to arrest and deport for the horrendous, seditious crime of being anti-monarchy! What a farce!

The Malaysian Insider : Liberalism has replaced PAS as main threat to Umno, says Muhyiddin - The Malaysian Insider

Liberalism: "A political theory founded on the natural goodness of humans and the autonomy of the individual and favoring civil and political liberties, government by law with the consent of the governed, and protection from arbitrary authority". Just one of many typical dictionary definitions. Brilliant, by stating that "liberalism" is UMNO's biggest threat, it seems that Muhyiddin has honestly and perhaps unintentionally defined what UMNO is. None of the above presumably?

The Malaysian Insider : Taib takes legal action to stop book on Sarawak timber trade - The Malaysian Insider

I find it interesting and more than a little amusing that Taib's lawyers, Mishcon de Reya themselves publicly list and repeat all the things that this book has accused Taib of. More usually in this sort of situation, lawyers would simply state that their client has been libelled, WITHOUT repeating the alleged libel in considerable detail. Their phrase "cause colossal and irreversible harm to our client's reputation" seems amusingly overblown too. It is almost as though even they are not taking their client Taib very seriously? Masters of sarcasm?

The Malaysian Insider : Treat as like adults, students coalition tells UM over banned Anwar rally - The Malaysian Insider

Alas the government does not even treat adults like adults, so what chance for students? How often do we hear phrases such as "people could easily become confused" or "people should be grateful" from the government, when people want free, open, debate or when people question the government.

The Malaysian Insider : Ridiculous to stop non-Muslims from using ‘Allah’, says Muslim Brotherhood leader - The

Alas "Malaya"s comment illustrates the fact that to some Malaysians, one does not, question, debate, think freely, voice varied opinions, etc, etc. But rather one blindly, gratefully, humbly, unquestioningly accepts the edicts, opinions and dogma of BN. Why? Because people will become easily confused, it is sensitive, it is the social conditions, it is not part of traditional Malay culture, etc, etc. Dr. Mahathir developed and perfected this theory and wow, it is a great way to control people. True, but it is also patronising, treats Malaysian adults like small children and hinders the development of Malaysian society and the normal, natural evolution of the country's culture. Malaysians deserve better than this, and need to be allowed to develop, as in any other country. 2020 anybody?

Sounds like a contradiction to me. The social contract is "not biased towards Malays" says Datuk Abdullah. Then in his next breath he adds, "Malays may have their privileges". Oxford Dictionary definition of the word privilege......'a special right, advantage'. Merriam Webster Dictionary definition of the word privilege.....'a right or benefit that is given to some people and not to others'. Well that seems quite clear to me.

The Malaysian Insider : Fraud suspect dies after jumping off 1st floor of district police HQ – Bernama - The Malaysian

The police have a duty to assure the safety of all those who are in their custody. Here they appear to have failed comprehensively. Further, from the details they give their failure looks: incomprehensible, careless in the extreme, unprofessional, possibly criminal (though that is for the AG to speculate upon). Adding that the victim had "eight criminal records" ?!?! is not relevant... And I assume that they meant he had a criminal record of eight offences, perhaps a mere detail, but one would expect the police to be absolutely accurate in such details.

The Malaysian Insider : Dr M defends MAS and blames Boeing for MH370’s disappearance - The Malaysian Insider

This latest outburst from the good Doctor absolutely confirms to me that he is indeed loosing his mental faculties.... Firstly we still have no idea what happened on that plane, so he is just as wrong as the distraught families of those on board to start pointing the finger of blame. At least it is understandable for those poor families to do so, but for him unforgivable. Secondly he criticises the fact that tracking systems could be disabled aboard the plane. He is no expert and neither am I, but a cockpit fire, short circuits, someone pulling a contact braker (a necessary safety feature in most electrical circuits)? Thirdly his talk of "remote control technology", yes there are drones flying as we all know, but as any aircraft engineer servicing Boeings will tell you there are NO remote control Boeings flying with any airline, technology and passangers are not yet ready for that. Forthly he mentions a team of experts attending the scene of any crash site, yes Boeing do this once they have actually FOUND the crash site. Fifthly he suggests that the pilot or copilot may have been suicidal and why could their actions not have been stopped by others. Well there reports of 2 passenger flights where this actually happened. And how does he KNOW that no one was "trying something" anyway, though cockpit doors are locked and bullet proof? One point, the only point he could be correct on, is that all were perhaps "incapacitated". There is a report where a plane crashed due to all on board being incapacitated due to lack of oxygen. But no, Dr. M. better not to say anything than to make a so far unwarranted attack on Boeing, or anyone else in the tragic event, in ignorance.

This is what is commonly known as riding on the gravy train. And of course that gravy train will keep rolling along until the day dawns when BN no longer forms the Government of the country; is no longer in power and able to allow, permit and attempt to justify such profligate spending of the country's money in such ways.
It seems quite clear that Utusan has now confirmed with this latest fantastic outburst that it is not a newspaper at all, but a dealer in fiction, sensationalism, bigotry and on occasion lies (judging from the libel cases it has lost).
Your logic appears muddled. The Daily Mail has rightly been criticised for innacurate and sensationalist reporting, it is a shoddy paper and that is what it often does. However to criticise Hisham's kneejerk reaction to the poor reporting does not mean that one is supporting the Daily Mail. Which libel law exactly to use to bring action against the Daily Mail and in which country? Which individual or organisation did it libel and in what precise illegal manner? No Hisham is just responding as local politicians and 'strong men' do, issuing threats which might work domestically in Malaysia, but are unlikely to work internationally.

What a rude shock for Hamidi! Gone are the days when a minister can just keep quiet about a tricky problem. Gone are the days when he can just make a bland statement which is not open to question. Gone are the days when the only questions are likely to come from tame local media. Gone are the days when his answers to those questions cannot very publicly be shown by experts to be absurd. Oh dear!

Any student of world history will know that there have been many instances of rulers cynically using religion as a political weapon. Those in power often coerced religious leaders, or indeed appointed their own religious leaders, who then dictated a political agenda under the disguise of religion to the masses. Wars and strife between catholics and protestants which caused untold misery in the middle ages is an example of this. It ceased when people started reading bibles in their own languages (not exclusively latin), began thinking for themselves, not blindly following the clergy and when the clergy lost the power to effectively condemn and imprison people. Religion and state became clearly separated. Government and religion completely separate entities. Time for change?

The Malaysian Insider : Muslim group calls for fatwa on ‘apocalyptic’ silk - The Malaysian Insider

Not being a Muslim I am not going to directly comment here, but I will draw a parallel with Christianity, of which I have some connections.... Surely a good Christian is one who tries to lead a good Christian life following the major teachings of Christ and of course the 10 commandments. However one sees far too many 'Christians' proudly wearing the crucifix, making a public show of going to church regularly, even breakfast prayer meetings , Mr. Bush? Yet these very public 'Christians' who put on such a show and talk of their faith constantly, are often the ones breeching the most basic and important tenets of their faith continually. They try to hide their most serious, most grievous unchristian sins behind a superficial facade of Christianity. I am always suspicious of those who make a great public show out of their faith, and spend great time discussing the less important details of it rather than the major tenets of it.
