MalLover said "Sheen would have waited all night for the cops" and since he was in the city, not the burbs, SPD would have responded quickly.

If this had happened in unincorporated King County, I'd be slightly more sympathetic, although I still don't think it's right or fair or just or helpful or patriotic or Christian to murder someone just for stealing your car stereo.

Self defense or not, prowler or not, shooting the guy was totally stupid and unnecessary. The prowler started it, but going out there with a gun escalated the situation. Morons, both of 'em.

That's nonsense. The cops will drop almost anything and get there right quick if there's any chance of catching a burglar in the act.

When cars were being prowled in our garage, the management installed hidden video cameras and started catching the punks. No one got killed, no one but thieves went to jail, and the prowls stopped. Problem solved.

"...and there was a little kid next to me."

Honest question--why does it make any difference if there's a kid around?

I think seeing parents getting stressed out about profanity is more problematic for kids than the profanity itself.

Yes, good on ya for doing a search and posting more info, but why give someone a hard time for making reasonable points instead of just complaining about how much they hate those damn kids with their rap music?

It is reasonable to think that a journalist actually writing a news article might do a little of the legwork for us.

That's strange. Nickels has promoted a policy of making less parking available, not more. He wants to squeeze people out of their cars with fewer parking spaces overall, paid or not. His model is San Francisco, the most anti-car city in the country. McGinn and Mallahan have both announced their desire to remove requirements for underground parking from developer permitting, which is probably the worst thing they could possibly do for livability in this city.

Since we're in the PNW, Electric cars with power originating from renewable wind and hydro energy will be common long before we have effective mass transit. Contrary to popular belief, buses and trains are much less energy efficient than individuals in gas-powered cars anyway.

You can do something about the situation directly. When there's a public hearing about a new building in your neighborhood, go to the meeting and raise the concern that you're afraid your parking is going to get worse because tenants/employees/guests of the new building won't have enough spaces.

Believe me, this works! This comes directly from a Capitol Hill developer complaining that he's being forced by DPD to pay more to build a garage big enough to house his tenants when he'd prefer to force them to look for street parking.

Buy a tank of gas for an SUV and a couple cartons of smokes and you're well on your way...

I am with you, man! It's not the speed. If you're drunk, you can just as easily cause a huge pile-up if you're going the speed limit. I've never driven drunk but, like most people, I drive 5 mph over the limit 99% of the time and I've never caused an accident in 25+ years.

Emotionally immature people get worked up about speeding (both the kid in the lowered Civic with the fart-pipe and grandpa, toddling along at 55 in the passing lane) because in "vehicle body language," speed comes across as aggression. It's the same phenomenon that causes road rage.

So, to keep banging the drum, cops should be mostly going after drunks and reckless drivers and not speeders. People who want to drive under the speed limit also need to stay out of the passing lane. There's nothing wrong with someone else being in more of a hurry than you are.

All it takes to "total" a car is for the repair costs to exceed the car's bluebook value. Just scraping against the column in a garage can total a car if it damages the front bumper, front quarter panel, both door panels and rear quarter panel.
