MalLover said "Sheen would have waited all night for the cops" and since he was in the city, not the burbs, SPD would have responded quickly. If this had happened in unincorporated King County, I'd be slightly more sympathetic, although I still don't think it's right or fair or just or helpful or patriotic or Christian to murder someone just for stealing your car stereo.

Self defense or not, prowler or not, shooting the guy was totally stupid and unnecessary. The prowler started it, but going out there with a gun escalated the situation. Morons, both of 'em.

That's nonsense. The cops will drop almost anything and get there right quick if there's any chance of catching a burglar in the act. When cars were being prowled in our garage, the management installed hidden video cameras and started catching the punks. No one got killed, no one but thieves went to jail, and the prowls stopped. Problem solved.

"...and there was a little kid next to me." Honest question--why does it make any difference if there's a kid around? I think seeing parents getting stressed out about profanity is more problematic for kids than the profanity itself.

Yes, good on ya for doing a search and posting more info, but why give someone a hard time for making reasonable points instead of just complaining about how much they hate those damn kids with their rap music? It is reasonable to think that a journalist actually writing a news article might do a little of the legwork for us.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : SDOT considers several solutions to parking crunch | KOMO News - Breaking News, Sports, Traffic and

That's strange. Nickels has promoted a policy of making less parking available, not more. He wants to squeeze people out of their cars with fewer parking spaces overall, paid or not. His model is San Francisco, the most anti-car city in the country. McGinn and Mallahan have both announced their desire to remove requirements for underground parking from developer permitting, which is probably the worst thing they could possibly do for livability in this city. Since we're in the PNW, Electric cars with power originating from renewable wind and hydro energy will be common long before we have effective mass transit. Contrary to popular belief, buses and trains are much less energy efficient than individuals in gas-powered cars anyway. You can do something about the situation directly. When there's a public hearing about a new building in your neighborhood, go to the meeting and raise the concern that you're afraid your parking is going to get worse because tenants/employees/guests of the new building won't have enough spaces. Believe me, this works! This comes directly from a Capitol Hill developer complaining that he's being forced by DPD to pay more to build a garage big enough to house his tenants when he'd prefer to force them to look for street parking.

I am with you, man! It's not the speed. If you're drunk, you can just as easily cause a huge pile-up if you're going the speed limit. I've never driven drunk but, like most people, I drive 5 mph over the limit 99% of the time and I've never caused an accident in 25+ years. Emotionally immature people get worked up about speeding (both the kid in the lowered Civic with the fart-pipe and grandpa, toddling along at 55 in the passing lane) because in "vehicle body language," speed comes across as aggression. It's the same phenomenon that causes road rage. So, to keep banging the drum, cops should be mostly going after drunks and reckless drivers and not speeders. People who want to drive under the speed limit also need to stay out of the passing lane. There's nothing wrong with someone else being in more of a hurry than you are.

All it takes to "total" a car is for the repair costs to exceed the car's bluebook value. Just scraping against the column in a garage can total a car if it damages the front bumper, front quarter panel, both door panels and rear quarter panel.

If that's what your gut tells you, I can respect that. My gut tells me the opposite. More than that, everyone I've ever known well who had a "gung ho" military man for a father (perhaps a dozen people) talked about being constantly abused as a child--verbally, emotionally and often physically. I'm not saying this is universal, but the military mindset is that people should obey orders without question and that is enforced almost entirely through punishment. Yes, structure is good for kids, but excessive punishment is the last thing they need and they experience it as abuse. These military parents love their children and do the best they can. They often have no idea what they are doing wrong. It's like they need to be de-programmed after leaving the service.

99%? I don't think so. 30% is probably a lot closer. I don't have any references either, but I think you'll find that in the majority of cases, those familiar with the details believe that there is abuse involved. It's almost impossible to prove, though.

This is her message to the impressionable young women watching her on Oprah? That we should all be ashamed of our naked bodies? How pathetic. Whether it was a publicity stunt or not, she had an opportunity to be a positive role model, but instead she chose to perpetuate the guilt and prudishness that lead to so much suffering in this country. How about saying something like "Well, it's unfortunate that someone chose to violate my privacy, but there's really no harm done. No one should be ashamed of being seen naked." Even if she was shocked when she first saw the video online, she had plenty of time to decide what to say during the interview and she blew it.

Yeah, so would I, but the State Patrol didn't write the article. If you look at it with street view on Google maps, you can see that the ramp just isn't anywhere near that far above the ground, although I'm sure it looks like it is when you're up there looking down.
KOMO - Seattle, WA : Wash. seeking $1 billion stimulus for rail | KOMO News - Breaking News, Sports, Traffic and Weather

Bullet trains are even less efficient than regular trains. We don't have anything close to the population density that would justify a high speed train in this area. You could maybe justify building one along the length of California or from Boston to DC, but not here. Let's hope it doesn't get that crowded here for a good long time. If someone could double the efficiency and halve the cost, it would be a different story. Of course, by then we'll be arguing that it would be better to replace the rails with pavement so computer/radar-guided, fuel-cell powered cars can take one or two passengers at a time through those corridors.

Not to mention that unless they are full virtually all the time (like NYC subways), trains are also worse for the environment, requiring more fuel per passenger than single-occupant cars. Make no mistake, trains exist to connect high density residential areas with high density employment areas. This give people a lot of flexibility, and is effective at keeping the economy going. Trains are a good thing, but they aren't cheap, they do not improve life for other commuters, and they are not good for the environment.

It wasn't 100 feet, it was 35 feet. He fell about three stories from the ramp onto the paved busway below. In a fall, every 10-foot story is roughly comparable to 10 mph, so this is like to flying over the handlebars and hitting a concrete wall going 35 mph.

What qualifies you to say what people are BAD and what people aren't when all you've heard is an accusation and no defense? That's called prejudging, and I associate that behavior with people who are just BAD. By the way, money doesn't break families apart. Being selfish and insensitive and treating each other badly is what breaks families apart, regardless of whether they are rich or poor.
