Peter,
Of course its an opinion. And so are your points.
For #2: Wasn't Alfresco planning to partner with Dropbox at some point in time? If cloud file sharing didn't have value, why would Alfresco want to do that?

You accuse me of spreading falsehood in #3. So in your opinion, which "old skool ECM" (i don't subscribe to that term btw) is architected for Cloud? Can you point me to customers using those or service providers who offer it as a SaaS (not managed hosting) based on one of those?

Peter, Bernhard, @jazzonbike - Thanks for your comments.

Why was Alfresco in the title? Well, it's an important ECM/DM vendor isn't it?
And the issue I was trying to address in this post was whether ECM tools are good fit for file-sharing use cases or not. The key aspect here is "cloud based file sharing" and not "cloud based ECM" or "cloud based something else". Sure, Alfresco (and other ECM/DM tools) can do file sharing but I don't consider them file-sharing tools - they don't have many key features that those file sharing tools have.

Now Does Alfresco bring ECM to the cloud? Well, that's a completely different post :).

Thanks Martin for your comment. I agree with you that IDM is probably more relevant for Portal than WCM - mainly because Portal is *usually* supposed to handle many applications whereas WCM *usually* handles its own content. That is why the paper also calls out user management as an important feature specifically for Portals.

However, having said that, i'd also argue that IDM is an important aspect to be considered independently of a Portal or a CMS tool. Its like a search engine in that sense - you can use a search engine from your Portal or CMS tool but for a large/complex/enterprise implementation you will probably use a separate search engine tool outside of your Portal/CMS and instead integrate it.

While we might have different opinions, I agree - if its viable for you, then its a good choice for you :).

Dara - That's an interesting point about portal software. We'd love to know more about your experiences in moving towards light weight, decoupled tools that you mentioned.

Like James, I also echo your thoughts Tony. In fact, some customers take it to an extreme. One of our customers wanted us to show them a reference - they wanted to talk with someone in North America, in the Banking industry, who had upgraded that specific product V, from a specific version x to a specific version y (mind you, x and y contained minor versions).

Good one. I actually registered and downloaded the "white" paper thinking i'll get some new insights into migration. Obviously that turned out to be a stupid idea! And i'm not even going to blog abt it because it'll just give them more publicity.

If the term vendor can be extended to include implementers also then this debate of what is a "cost of sale" has many other implications. As an example, an implementation partner does a due diligence to understand requirements so as to be able to give a "fixed price quote". Should a customer pay for that? From a customer point of view, the requirements they gave in the first place were complete but my experience shows that that is many times not the case.
So i'd say there is not straight answer - it depends on each situation, the size of the deal, strategic importance of relationship and many other such factors. Sometimes, it is included in some other component (for example, warranty is often included as part of implementation cost) while at other times, it is a pure investment - cost of sale, cost of relationship, cost of reference or whatever :).
