I think you're right - the characters did have that fairy tale quality to them, rather than being fully-fleshed.

Absolutely - if I were her, I'd be very very anxious about having another book to bring out to the adoring masses!

He is American, and I read it in English - but I made a wee mistake! I thought that Bierce had translated this from German, but actually the novel is supposedly a rewritten version of a German original, which is quite a different thing. I've changed my review accordingly. Thanks for pointing this out to me! :)
