"I am increasingly persuaded that the earth belongs exclusively to the living and that one generation has no more right to bind another to its laws and judgments, than one independent nation has the right to command another" Thomas Jefferson from the John Adams series

Quote of the day: "A man will fight harder for his interests than for his rights." Napoleon Bonaparte

This is why it is a bit unrealistic to expect a government based on moral principles. American conservatives need to focus on dealing with--that is, balancing-- the flaws in the human character rather than hoping that we can elect individuals in which self-interest does not exist.

it is far easier to restrain the excesses of human selfishness than it is to eradicate it.

the problem with the free-market argument is that, although competition is good for the consumer, it is bad for the bottom line of businesses. Removing government regulation from the market will not remove 'governance.' What you get are monopolies which will either buy out or force out competitors using asymmetrical financial and political advantages. Doing so allows companies to regulate the market in the place of governments. The only difference is that, once entrenched in the political and economic structure of a particular system, the vast majority of people will have no say in how thsoe companies regulate the economy, and with it society itself. one only needs to look at the examples of Russia or the soc-called "Asian Tigers"during the 1990s.

It is a mistake to believe that our financial elites would not naturally become our political elites in a completely ungoverned system. Markets were created by by states in the early Middle Ages to exploit the military potential of a specified geographic territory ( see http://neofed.blogspot.com/2009/05/original-gangs... and http://neofed.blogspot.com/2009/05/reasons-of-sta... ). Control of the means of production can be translated into military and political power abroad. Advocates of a free market are arguing for a system that never was and never will be

very true my friend. What is the point of living in the richest country in the world if only the top 1 percent on the population get to enjoy it? Income per capita in the US is atrocious.
