As someone who knew both Ruben and Troy well, it is truly a heartbreaking situation all around. Ruben never regained consciousness after the crash, this decision was made by his family based on the understanding that he was never going to regain any quality of life nor ever be able to make the decision on his own... Keep in mind only the defense claims he ever was capable of communicating or of making this decision, no doctors or experts testified that this is true (or at least it has not been reported by either Gazette or KCRG that there was any corroboration to the defense's version of the events.)

Ruben's alleged past drunk driving does not alleviate the result of what happened on the night of October 5, 2009, and while he should not have been in that car, he was not the driver and ultimately not responsible for the tragic result.

I hope there's a satisfactory resolution to all of this that can save both men's souls but I feel like the damage has forever been done to both of these families. RIP Ruben and may god have mercy on Troy

Great Article, Mike. Been reading your stuff in the Gazette for 30 years or so now. Here's hoping the Hawkeyes can live up to the expectations in 2010, it was a lot easier when no one expected us to be good!

It's a disaster for the BUSH White House. Years of deregulation and allowing the oil companies to 'self certify' their safety? Haha.

What exactly is Obama supposed to have done about it? Nationalized BP? That would have set off you teabaggists weeping "Socialism!!" and "Hands off my Capitalisms!!!"

Or maybe Obama was supposed to send some military submarines down there to invade the oil leak? Oh that's right our military submarines would have imploded from the crush value at 2400 feet, only 1600 feet short. Sorry, but this is a Bush/Cheney issue, being comfy with the oil companies was their precedent.

Yes, we should all be wary of Obama's great socialist agenda - why, just this last week his evil policies took the DOW above 11,000 for the first time since Bush took office in '01 - who knows what additional havoc Obama's wealth-sharing fasco-commu-nazism will wreak on capitalism, it could go to 12,000 and everyone knows how bad that would be!!

Why is it Glenn Beck and his ilk only have a problem with "wasteful" spending when it's not a Bush or a Reagan in office doing it? Anyone recall how we got to these economy and budget issues in the first place? Oh yes, now I recall - 8 years of wasteful spending by republicans, where was the concern then, Glenn?
