As someone who knew both Ruben and Troy well, it is truly a heartbreaking situation all around. Ruben never regained consciousness after the crash, this decision was made by his family based on the understanding that he was never going to regain any quality of life nor ever be able to make the decision on his own... Keep in mind only the defense claims he ever was capable of communicating or of making this decision, no doctors or experts testified that this is true (or at least it has not been reported by either Gazette or KCRG that there was any corroboration to the defense's version of the events.) Ruben's alleged past drunk driving does not alleviate the result of what happened on the night of October 5, 2009, and while he should not have been in that car, he was not the driver and ultimately not responsible for the tragic result. I hope there's a satisfactory resolution to all of this that can save both men's souls but I feel like the damage has forever been done to both of these families. RIP Ruben and may god have mercy on Troy

It's a disaster for the BUSH White House. Years of deregulation and allowing the oil companies to 'self certify' their safety? Haha. What exactly is Obama supposed to have done about it? Nationalized BP? That would have set off you teabaggists weeping "Socialism!!" and "Hands off my Capitalisms!!!" Or maybe Obama was supposed to send some military submarines down there to invade the oil leak? Oh that's right our military submarines would have imploded from the crush value at 2400 feet, only 1600 feet short. Sorry, but this is a Bush/Cheney issue, being comfy with the oil companies was their precedent.

I wish I could live in a fantasy candyland where I honestly believed CEOs of companies "earn" $345 million annually on average because they worked so darn hard. It would be so much easier to poofle around in the clouds and have imaginary gumdrop parties with EJP1 and his crew if I could convince myself that "working hard" is how you get ahead in this country, and that being born into privilege has nothing to do with how life ends up for you. If hard work was directly correlative to salary, this country would be owned by mexican roofers. Instead it's owned by greedy fatcats that inherited their positions who would go to all sorts of lengths to avoid having to pay 1/100th of a percentage point off their yearly profit in additional taxes that would directly benefit hundreds of their employees and fellow Americans. Patriots pay their taxes and Patriots help their fellow citizens. The end.

restoguy - the key here is that while this wasn't the most progressive bill in the history of our country, it was a *monumental* turning point in the way governance works, and a huge victory for progressives everywhere - we have learned what it is to win, and we have learned how to do it. It is almost certainly a step in the right direction towards future improvements, and more importantly is has signaled the breaking of the chains of regression that the right wing has shackled America with since Reagan gamed his way into office. Go USA!

Yes - the only reason Social Security (and many other governmental programs) has been in trouble in the last three decades is because of a concerted effort by the right wing to provide the most shoddily run government they can possibly muster to "prove" that government does not work. Can you name some *specific* examples of socialized medicine failing in every country it has ever been tried? Quoting sound bites from Beck or Limbaugh does not satisfy this request. I've been to many places in Europe that are economically thriving, and I've taken advantage of universal health coverage for even non-EU residents in Greece, Spain and the UK - and every single time I had immediate medical care with compassionate providers, and I was sent away with a prescribed course of treatment and never once paid more than 10 Euros. Sounds pretty horrible all things considered, I have to agree (HA), but perhaps maybe you should get a passport and travel around a bit more to help broaden your horizons. It'll do you some good!
