I understand from other reports that Patel was not allowed to speak to junior civil servants with direct experience of an issue. Don't I recall Jim Hacker escaping from his minders to talk to someone who knew what they were talking about? The Civil Servive hasn't changed.

The Telegraph reports that Sir Alex did not interview Priti Patel before writing his report. This does not sound like a very thorough or fair job.

It is not a delusion of the Brexiteers but of Mrs May herself and her remain advisers.

The "cake and eat it" remark of Boris obviously means that we want to be free and have a good relationship with the EU but that would mean a Canada + style of FTA, hardly an ambitious target between a major trading nation and its next door neighbour.

Anna Soubry must be an entryist into the Conservative Party, where she clearly does not belong.

I accept that Mrs May is dogged, but I also feel that she only listens to those who have her ear (e.g. Olly Robbins) and is deaf to everyone else in her Party. Does she ever read the strong criticism on both Conservative Home and Telegraph comment sections?

I still think that Boris has the charisma and Brexit credentials to see through Brexit and lead the Tories into a sunlit upland.

I hope Boris is biding his time for when Parliament resumes.

Your point about the absence of Euro-federalists in the UK is apt, as the elephant in the room on the Remain side is where the EU is heading, which I guess is not something Remainers wished to talk about.

It's complete rubbish. I have covered fishing just above in my comment. On agriculture, how can adopting every regulation EU imposes be in control of our own policy? On immigration, giving free movement to temporary workers as well as adhering to all their rights to family life in the HRA will effectively be no different to what we have now. As for trade policy, how can we sign comprehensive FTAs with other states when we still have to abide by EU regulations?

The lack of political ambition in the Chequers white paper is demonstrated by Section 3.5.1 on fishing. It rightly states that EU fishermen catch more than eight times the tonnage of fish in British waters that our fishermen do in theirs, yet all it proposes is annual negotiations with the EU and a generalised commitment to sustainable fisheries.

Where is the starting point for negotiations of equality between what we catch in their waters and what they catch in ours? Where is a statement that we will not allow foreign fishing vessels to masquerade as British in order to take our fish? You just know that Mrs May will claim a victory if they reduce the unequal catches to a factor of, say, five to one.
