I don't have anyone who can adopt him, but my friends are on notice that one of them will have to take him in temporarily until they find him a permanent home.

He's 16 years old, so hopefully it won't come to that.

I pray that Oliver goes before I do because I'd rather be brokenhearted than him think that I abandoned him, and he would unravel in a shelter.

I follow a number of animal rescue and foster accounts on Instagram. Periodically there are posts about dogs and cats dropped off at shelters and the comments about those owners are vicious. It's hard for me not to judge too, but after two very expensive visits to the vet in one month, it makes me sad that you have to be well-off to afford having a pet. Oliver is definitely my last one as I head into my fixed income years.
