Where do dads learn that over the holidays they need to sort out the tree, get the mixed nuts ready (and nutcracker), make sure the heating is working etc. Obviously mums do these things too, but dads seem to take inordinate pride in them, like some kind of hunter-gatherer hangover "must get cave cosy" or something.

Anyway, my dad's hobbies include: the village Music Society which organises classical concerts, gardening, walking around with his arms behind his back, reading the paper and wtaching Sky Arts. He is hard to buy presents for as he is a Grumpy Old Man and has been known to lecture us on the economic gap between value of presents at point of sale and the value given to them by the recipient...we don't do surprise presents anymore (for him). Lol.

RoseCamelia, you also helped me about a year ago when I was struggling through some anxiety/depression issues, and this forum was the only space I felt able to talk about it. Things are really looking up now, but it's been a struggle and am still working hard. Thanks for being like our mother hen!

aqueousmedium- things get better, stay strong. Personally speaking, exercise helps plus taking medication, but also vegging in front of the TV and mainlining dark chocolate. Hope you find what works for you.

My feed is mostly Bitch Media posts, women's rights charities talking about UN development goals and the use of rape as a weapon of war, "Exposing Men's Rights Activism", and trailers to Jurassic World. Oh wait those are all groups that I've liked. Think I've hidden everyone else...

Further to my above comment, look what curmudgeonly delights the J Franz has served up in a press event this week: (also I read the title wrong to begin with and could NOT stop laughing ) http://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/may/27/jona...

Oh and as for films: The Sea Inside (El Mar Adentro with Javier Bardem) is a sobfest, as is the end of Pan's Labyrinth. Every. Time.

Sorry to hear about your cat, that's awful.

About the depression thing- I found it hard to cry at actual triggers (sad book/tv) when I was struggling with bad depression last year, but instead I would sometimes cry for no reason/ just feeling sorry for myself. That kind of crying didn't bring any kind of relief at all- it just made me feel worse ("what kind of state am I in? etc). So yeah don't force it, and be glad you're not crying for no reason?
Maybe go out for a walk regularly if you can- I found that exercise & reconnecting with nature really helped (and antidepressants too) get myself back on a more even keel. And now I cry at sad TV. Hope things improve, sending good vibes.

I cried at a documentary on women's rights this weekend, and then again while listening to Amy Winehouse's first album ("these lyrics are so prescient it's just so SAD") and again today while watching Poldark at a key scene <a href="http://(http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02jslnf" target="_blank">(http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02jslnf - latest BBC period drama set in 18th C Cornwall. Started a bit trite but has now become SO GOOD).

I'm a crying machine, but I have had the flu. So yeah, I recommend....the flu.

is the obstetrical paradox the whole "why do human females have hips that can barely fit out their own babies' heads meaning more and more rely on medical science to intervene?" I am FASCINATED by that (also because it seems the shittest part of our evolution so far). What theories are being raised atm? All I've read is the pay-off between big brained children versus walking upright (smaller hips than otherwise needed for birth)..
