I won't/can't say that any series is 'better' than Air Jordan. To me, that's not even up for debate.
BUT
I remember being about nine years old when MJ first retired. Shaq was such a versatile talent and so popular with kids that the OP's statement indeed reflects at least part of what was going on in the early-mid '90s. But the OG Shaqnosis happened to be up against a freight train of a Nike Basketball lineup that year, so it's only natural that some sneakerheads will remember this as their favorite, especially given that underdog context.

I'm no physicist, but when you consider the massive force needed to cause that tear, had it not been 'released' at that point, might one of Griffin's left leg joints been forced to bear the brunt of the impact?
