This second comment is spot-on. I won't/can't say that any series is 'better' than Air Jordan. To me, that's not even up for debate. BUT I remember being about nine years old when MJ first retired. Shaq was such a versatile talent and so popular with kids that the OP's statement indeed reflects at least part of what was going on in the early-mid '90s. But the OG Shaqnosis happened to be up against a freight train of a Nike Basketball lineup that year, so it's only natural that some sneakerheads will remember this as their favorite, especially given that underdog context.
