You can create a custom IPSW in a virtualized environment but not restore in a virtualized environment. Firstly, Dev Team don't recommend it as I recall from their past releases. Secondly, when the device switches modes (recovery, DFU, etc) the host PC might take control. Not 100% sure on that but it's always to be safe that sorry.

Never ever restore your iPhone in a virtualized environment. Something is bound to go wrong. Like smokingiphone said, download a custom restore for your device off the internet.

Firstly, yes you can create a custom IPSW on a Mac and then use Windows to restore your device to that new IPSW. You don't use redsn0w to upgrade, you use iTunes. ultrasn0w is not the jailbreak either, it is the unlock so you can use your iPhone on any carrier.

Just google "custom restore iphone 3gs 3.1" and restore.

Indeed they are SOL. WinPwn used to help a lot back in the days but we always had QuickPwn then so it was pretty much pointless. Only thing that Windows users can do is google for a custom iPhone 3GS 3.1 restore.

Just download a custom IPSW from somewhere, you'll be able to find some tomorrow if you Google around.
