I can't think of a better director for this material. I know universal doesn't want to be blue balled with the hope of a big box office smash only to see it under perform like WB was with Watchmen, but you don't get into making movies if you don't have a certain tolerance for risk.

If you have never watched the show before, let me tell you now, its much better than you think.

It contains a strange mixture of other HBO shows.

+Sex and the City - A group of women gabbing about relationships, except they are all with the same guy.

+Sopranos - FLDS and LDS is portrayed like rival mafia gangs, all using any means necessary to attain power

+Carnivale - Weird FLDS compound people are kind of like carnies.
