I think it proves that in 1997, the public were so sick of Tories they'd have voted for Jimmy Savile, and Labour was so sick of being in opposition they'd have run him as the candidate. You can't understand Blair's career without those two facts.

It's worth pointing out that there is an additional layer of camouflage here; sourcing to "friends" is well-established newspaper code for "their PR agent, or someone else operating as such, briefed it to us off the record to get it into the papers". As in "Friends of David Miliband believe he intends to stand up for modernisers..." and very similar to "Sources close to Jeremy Hunt..."

What's their brigade commander, Colonel Tunnell, doing these days?
