hi, Q spacewitch here in NC, and two blocks from where i am there are actual literal bisexual, trans, and genderqueer pride flags along the town's main street, along with the rainbow flag and the US flag. I trust that NC has facilities that would be inclusive, and am grateful that y'all are considering having it here so maybe I could come. :) It feels good to be supported.

Man, I'm about to write a dissertation chapter on the slipperiness of knowledge-buiding about/in/around North Korea*, and Suki Kim's book is one of the few I've read to date that gets visceral about the constant terror (usually low-level, not always) of surveillance. Barbara Deming's Nothing to Envy is also real good, but Kim -- jeez. Nobody I've read gets at the futility and necessity of building relationships in these environments like she does.

Y'all read that long, long expose for Mother Jones by Shane Bauer last week about working in/for a private prison in Louisiana? That's the kind of work Suki Kim does in her book. The way folks treated her is infuriating.

*it's got to do with Choco Pies and their tie to Moon Pies and their value on the black market. i have eaten many of both kinds of pie as research.

Same with the one on the "Mississippi Delta," which took place mostly in Oxford and Jackson, neither of which are in the Delta. Lot of people I know were reeeeeal pissed about that one.

That would (probably!) be Brett Anderson's "Louisiana Loses Its Boot", which is an excellent piece by a similarly excellent dude! He came to one of my classes to talk about this piece.

idk, I feel like the fate of the socks was sealed before they ever began to appear in physical form. The answer to "are you ever going to make anything else," especially from a man, especially while a woman is discussing her feelings on screen, is something along the lines of "why would I when I can use this festive dishcloth to stuff your mouth shut?", not "let me spend many hours and lots of intellectual labor on your behalf."
