Watson Inc : Why Do We Worry About Money?

Just because you make decisions to minimize a financial hit (ie, good stewardship) does not mean that you are worrying about money. Worry is rooted in fear whereas good stewardship is rooted in faith.

Watson Inc : Should You Buy A House Outright?

Hi Emily, If you can purchase the house outright, you should not need a mortgage. You would likely have to pay property taxes, maintenance costs, closing costs (unless you negotiate that the seller pays these for you when you purchase), and home owner association fees (if applicable to your community), title insurance (when you purchase), and home inspection fee (prior to closing the deal; almost always recommended that you get the property inspected). You may also have a budget for repairs, depending on the shape the house is in.

Relationships with people can be a great source of happiness. The costs of true friendship is often time rather than money. In fact, I would be concerned about any relationship that is based on money. Thank you for your wonderful comment!

Watson Inc : Is Social Mobility Fact or Fiction?

It definitely can happen. In terms of it frequency relative to downward mobility, it unfortunately depends on the subset of the population you are talking about :-( I also agree that it is necessary: it is part of the very fabric that many people/countries hold dear. It's very important.

Despite improvements, people often have a relative perspective when judging their statuses. Thus, they don't feel mobile because their lives don't appear significantly changed compared with someone else. For example, net worth, inflation-adjusted income, and lifestyles improved marginally in >25 years for some people. One could argue that that they are in the same relative positions even if they enjoy their nonmanufacturing jobs more than their parents. FYI, the grass typically looks greener on the other side :-) I don't doubt what you are saying about bemoaning the loss of manufacturing jobs one iota.

Yeah, sometimes it is very hard for us to get outside of ourselves to see the big picture. Sometimes we need perspective more than money.

Yeah Elizabeth, that's true. I think there are even more of nonmillionaires who take it for granted too. They forget that there are plenty of people who who work hard and are intelligent who didn't have the leg up that they were provided. It should humble many of us.

Networking and exposure are big too. There's no denying that. It's amazing how that can affect us later down the line, even if we choose unrelated professions. I think the broader issues is that some people do have advantages, even if it doesn't mean that your parents personally write you a $100,000 to bankroll your first business endeavor. Also, I think it tells us to build wealth, significant wealth, if we want to provide great opportunities and protection to our families.

Dear Sued, Thanks so much for your kind comment. I can only imagine the role being the less-dominant gender can play on ones psyche. We derive a great deal of ourselves based on the social mirror that we derive from the perceived opinions of others. Thus, even subtle differences in how your brothers were treated could do a great deal to motivate or demotivate you. It's quite a fascinating situation personally. That's interesting: bullying and the need to prove oneself! That kind plays into the whole "builder" versus "spender" paradox that we discussed earlier. They are really two sides of the same coin, different manifestations of the same "pathology," if you can call being driven to be what most people consider successful a disease. thank you for such a thoughtful comment.

Dear John, That's very perceptive. I'm a true believer in valuing oneself too. I feel we often are far too dismissive of the gifts that we have. Instead, we focus on the negative, our limitations, and our shortcomings. An overbearing familial environment can certainly train you ignore yourself. It can thwart the fire within you so to speak. Just like Miss T said with the bullying, the environment you grow up in can shape your life years afterwards.

Watson Inc : Why You NEED Blow Money

Thank you so much!!! I feel you when you say we're all human. I think that part of the reason to note common behaviors and stop holding ourselves to standards that are not reasonable. The challenge is often what are we likely to do and what do we want to do. If our budget only focuses on what we want to do and ignores what we're likely to do, we can get into a lot of trouble! Great comment!!!
