One thing that I've learned that I remind myself about a lot is to make sure I take time to talk casually with my staff on a regular basis. I ask them how things are going, ask how a particular program went, or something along those lines. It's easy for me to get so caught up in my own work that I'm not sitting and listening enough, but I learn so very much from these kinds of conversations with staff. So that's been an ongoing challenge for me.
That sounds like a book I'd really like.
I agree wholeheartedly that it matters what other people think of you, and you are definitely not forgettable, Kerri.
Good luck with your projects and the move! I'm getting ready to move, too--it's a TON of work.
I can get like this, too, when I just have a short window of time, and I'd consider two hours pretty short. I am a person who needs to transition from one thing to another, kind of get my mind in the right place to do whatever I'm doing next, so that's part of my problem. Anyway, I have a bunch of writing deadlines coming up, so I can't afford not to be productive, so something I started doing just last week is that every day when I'm done with my writing session, I leave myself a note on my desk about what I should work on the next time I sit down to write. I try to be fairly specific ("write about dream you had about buying shoes" or "find electronic version of article"). That's been working pretty well for me, to help me handle the transition. Instead of sitting and having to figure out what I'm going to do, there's a note from me telling me what to do, so usually I do it.
For what it's worth. :)
Abby, This is BRILLIANT, and so well-timed (at least for me!). We're doing a Christmas-themed storytime tomorrow, and I think I might see if I can make one of these today to use. Seems simple enough, and it will be fun. We have another Christmas storytime later in the month, too--we do a few every December--so we'll get use out of it for a long while.
Thank you!
I am thankful to have gotten to know you through blogging.
You are so industrious with your house projects. Whenever you talk about them, I think I should really consider painting something one of these days.
Will look forward to pictures.
As much as I travel, it always makes me buggy. Good luck with your last-minute preparations!
