Well, now I have TWO books to add to my to-read list. Great interview!

I tried this book twice (by accident--two different covers!) and couldn't get past the first few chapters either time. I have never picked up another Maas because of that, but now I'm interested to hear you say that ACOMAF is better.

I finish most books, but if I'm flat out bored, I will abandon it. If I'm just annoyed, I usually will keep going. And as another commenter said, if I'm bored, but mildly curious about the outcome, I'll skim the ending just to get that sense of closure. Life is too short to waste on books that aren't interesting.

We only see one or two movies a year in the theater, and we had a gift card to use up in December, so we chose this one. We both enjoyed it, even though my husband has only seen the movies and wouldn't describe himself as a fan. I agree that the creatures were terrific (that Niffler!), the 20s fashions were a delight, and Jacob and Queenie were completely adorable.

"Books should come in pairs." Love it!

I have never heard of this series, which is a definite reason for doing these throwback reviews! Thank you--it sounds like some of my students would love these.

I think maybe Cait was referring to the idea that Thomas Edison is now seen as NOT being the "inventor" of the light bulb so much as the guy who took other's ideas and inventions and either snapped up the patents and/or made commercially viable products from the inventions of others. Our US elementary schools are historically rife with mis-information, like Columbus "discovering" the Americas.

None of which changes your very excellent point! I know my love of history comes straight from all the historical fiction I read as a kid, but how much of what I "know" about different times and places is actually wildly inaccurate?

I was so proud of my American self the other day, when I was all, "Hey, isn't it Guy Fawkes around now?" Totally something I know about only from books, starting with Black Hearts in Battersea years ago. (I THINK it references the plot.)

I was at our local bookstore a few weeks ago and they had a huge area set up for a book signing. I tried to see what book was featured, and when I saw Bryan Cranston, I was all, "Who?" I thought it was a cookbook, actually! Some celebrity chef, which is pretty funny considering the role he's famous for.

I think as a kid,the series I read had all been LOOOONG finished (think Narnia and Little House on the Prairie), so I never even really thought about waiting between books for more. When I got older, I started reading some contemporary mystery writers that had ongoing series, but with that type of series, while you have continuity and character development (at least in the good ones!), each book has its own plot, so it's not like you need to track a lot of information in order to understand the following books. Harry Potter is honestly the first series I can think of where I wound up waiting for the next book--and even then, there were the movies to a) tide me over and b) keep the story fresh in my mind.

I feel like it's really only very recently that I've started unfinished series, and I find it really frustrating. I read a lot, and I honestly just don't REMEMBER all the details of every book, so if it's a really long wait between books, I'm likely to lose interest, because I've forgotten what was going on in the first place. If I can get a "running start" with, say, 2-3 books, then I'm more likely to maintain interest and keep going even if I have to start waiting between books.

LOOOOOVE her stuff. Just started reading her in August and have finished ADSOM, Gathering of Shadows, This Savage Song, and Vicious. I don't thinK I can pick a favorite...maybe Vicious? ADSOM? There's no weak links, that's for sure.

When I read this one, one thing I loved was that in the beginning you really have NO FREAKING IDEA what is going on in their world, but it's Victoria "Dark Perfection" Schwab (as I think of her), so you KNOW it will all come clear and be awesome.
