Sixth book. Three books are based on the films. Two are based on the shorts. 1. Through the Mirror. 2. Rainbow Rocks. 3. The Mane Event, this one is based on the second film, not the second book. 4. Sunset Shimmer's Time To Shine. To be honest, I've not read this one, lol. 5. Friendship Games.

To summarize, the book series is the Who's On First? of the franchise. XD

I'd assume this means they weren't simultaneously producing EG4. With the time nessecary to make an EG gone, replaced by time spent in FiM pre-production... :3

I ought to note the 2017 film shall not enter production phase until the second half of next year, and that more likely it's currently in the scripting phase. ;)
