Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Getting the bus all wrong.

As someone said: I don't try to be good to be loved by God, I am good because God loved me when I was still bad"

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Leaving church before it's over.

I have two general rules for movies and new churches I visit: 1. Don't turn the TV off (or walk out) before the end as you never know how it can turn out at the end -benefit of the doubt; and 2. Even if i didn't like the overall thing, It is possible that I missed or misunderstood something; a second chance is usually a good idea to make things clear. On the same topic, I've heard that you need to visit a church at least 4 times to get a good idea of whether it fits you or not.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Listening to devil music.

If Heavy distorted guitars, fast paced drums and a cough-like voice is what it takes for people to scream in worship, I AM ALL FOR IT. I am a rock/heavey/metal fun. Although I chose at some point to mostly listen to music that would edify me and put "good thoughts" in my mind, I still feel a "tingly"when I hear certain secular bands; great music, horrible lyrics.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Having 2 Gods.

Good stuff!. We often get into the "I have to obey the commandments to please God" mode. What we forget is that part of 'obeying the commandments' is obeying ALL of the commandments, including the ones that say that He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse our unrighteousness when we sin -if we confess (Agree with God and turn away from sin). We forget commandments like "There is therefore NOW no condemnation.. to those in Christ"; "...We've been forgiven, cleaned, justified...", "...we are a chosen generation, priesthood..". The best of all, all by grace so that no one can boast.

I could be wrong, BUT, Jesus, Paul, Peter and the rest of the first gang, utilized and participated in Jewish and Greek traditions, events and places (Jewish temple, Greek temples and places etc) , not necessarily to promote or support them in itself but as tools and vehicles to preach the Gospel of Christ... So can we. We could get all legalistic over and against every single thing that has no Biblical source, commandment or with pagan influence and/or roots and not participate (Christmas, Easter to some extent, Independence Day etc), however, this will likely not get us any closer or make us any more effective towards God.. nor men

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Wondering if you could get out of the way if a stereo speaker fell from the ceiling at church.

Imagine the speaker dropping as you sing "Le your glory fall.." Seriously, a few years ago back in my home country, as were in 'worship time', all of th sudden everything started shaking; the plants hanging on the stage started moving little by little -everyone could see it.... we all looked at each other.. the music stopped (This is true story) people started to look surprised.. confused, fearful... just a few seconds after, the worship leader started dancing, umping, and celebrating JESUS IS HERE!!... everyone followed singing and raising hands.. I got emotional too.. confused but very emotional.. i thought at my young teenage age: "Could this be the moment we've been talking about? is the rapture here?.... a few more seconds went by... the place was coming to an extasy as dust fell from the roof.... and then it all stopped... Jesus was not bodily here.. we were still there... no angels around... no Gabriel playing the harp.. We learned later, it had been a small earthquake. .. and we made it on the evening news.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Me & CNN.

After reading all of the comments on CNN (yes, going to bed at almost 4am..), I wonder how much of this 'resistance' to Christianity with the atheist mantra really is a cause of disbelieve for most. I guess what i am wondering is, do..say 80% of people in USA who don't believe in Jesus do so -or don't do so, because of all the logic and scientific stuff.. or, perhaps most people don't even care about evolution/ID and do care more about seeing true life and power from God at work in His people?.. is perhaps holiness and a growing knowledge on The Word backed by a life that walks the talk a more relevant way of winning debates? ... feeling some conviction here... Good article Jon!!

I have a 'friend' who always jumps to give advice when my wife makes parenting comments on FB; the funny thing is that this lady lost custody of her child a ,long time ago due to drugs or something like that. Sh is redeemed and al I guess but should stay away from the parenting counseling arena I think.

As point (a) states: "From the Bible's perspective". It assumes that The Bible is accurate in itself. This being one of the elements in the sum of viable (not necessarily scientifically proven) evidences. Even if you discount all of the Bible verses that some critics argue are contradictory of flawed, the main tenants of Christianity still stand. (which by the way, most of the inconsistencies they cite are grammatical errors that don't change the meaning overall). Even if you take only the Old Testament as archeologically verified by manuscripts, you can still make a fair case.

The problem with this labels is that there will always be someone who argues the minuscule intricacies of the potential meaning hence making an argument of anything. Technically, you can take any word/label and twisted according to your subjective understanding and pleasure: - Religion can be defined as allegiance to a god or a faith (I am religious because I pledge faith to God) OR something similar to a habit (I religiously eat breakfast or go to church on Sundays..which doesn't necessarily proves an allegiance to God), - Spiritual, as you point out, can mean 'concerned for spiritual things' (God, Buddha, and even atheist - I know someone will chip in here) - 'relationship' can be a description for Christianity BUT, also I could say I have a relationship with my father (human) -the problem is that it is a 'rocky troublesome' relationship. I would say that everybody has a religion (Everybody places their faith on something whether God, The Bible, money or the believe that there is no God); everybody is spiritual in some way, Christianity is a religion, but not all spirituals or religious are Christians.

As I responded to you elsewhere (which I am including below for the sake of those in this segment), this and mostly any other argument we can end up involved with, will not have a mutual agreement because it all comes down to one issue: Jesus resurrection: (a) From the Bible's perspective, the one event our whole faith hangs on is the resurrection of Jesus and hence our acceptance of this event as a fact that proves He was indeed God and therefore validates every other claim He made -including that He was not just a prophet or a good person but the son of God (including His validation of the Bible). As someone noted, you either believe Jesus was God, a lunatic or a lier. (b) from your perspective of, as you mentioned "REASON", this is just not a true fact (I assume), and therefore everything else Christianity claims can and will be opposed by you with logical arguments that demand a prove; a process that will never end because ultimately -and i know there are various theories on this, Christian claims cannot be scientifically proven or fully evidenced by scientific methods (c) People like me have accepted the resurrection as a historical fact based on the sum of very plausible -though not all of them totally scientifically proven, conclusions and evidences. Again, I know there is no hard evidence (based on your standards), but, I choose to accept that all of the -let's call them 'circumstantial evidences' lead me to conclude there is a fairly solid statistical probability that it happened. The gap between possible and evident, in my mind, is filled by faith, which is my intentional acceptance of the fact I cant see or prove.
