http://lifetimereadingplan.blogspot.com/ : Rachel Ray by Anthony Trollope

Although Rachel Ray works fine as a first Trollope read, I've heard that The Warden is better. I think I'll have to read that one (and its follow-up novels) soon.

Thank you for stopping by! I really did enjoy Rachel Ray very much, but I do see that it is one of Trollope's lesser novels for a reason. Nevertheless, the charm and wit of his characterizations makes me want to read more.

I hope you enjoy Rachel Ray if you get a chance to read it. With this book (and it sounds like with most Trollope), I kept thinking about who I would cast in each role if I were making a film version of the novel. (I'm imagining Shirley Henderson as Mrs. Prime.)

http://lifetimereadingplan.blogspot.com/ : A Personal Odyssey

Thanks. Fadiman is a great read--quirky and opinionated, down to earth and pretentious, charming and witty. At the very moment you've had it with his pretentiousness, he turns around, makes you laugh, and reminds you that he has only written his book because of his love of and enjoyment of literature. I highly recommend it. You've got a point about the Bible. Thinking about it as philosophy is a nice way to think about it. But I'm worried that no matter how I talk about it, I'll be stepping on a lot of toes and offending almost everyone. I certainly don't want to do that.

I can imagine! When I started putting things together, I had much more limited choices. But as I get more and more aware of what I am doing, I get more and more excited about each little section.

I'll be starting Gilgamesh on the 5th and writing about it through the 17th. (My plan right now is a M-W-F schedule.) Sounds like the Chris of ProSe blog might join us as well! I'll try to connect with y'all by email soon to see what we want to do. OK?

I keep telling myself that if I totally freak out at the order, I'll let go of it. The project will still be a success. So glad my lists might be helpful for you. Much is missing--and they are too long at the same time--but I figure they'll be my starting point.

This was my father's very favorite book when he was a young boy--and Scout Finch loved it in To Kill a Mockingbird. I still haven't read it, but I think I'll have to remedy that!

That is a good question. Without any real knowledge or justification, I decided since so much of the literature of this period grows directly out of it, the New Testament sort of is the starting point of a new movement in literature. Of course, what it starts here continues into the 17th and 18th as well as future books.... Do you know if there is a more standard way to do this?

Thanks so much for your encouragement, Allie, and for your inspiring blog. I too feel astonished how much is out there that I have not read and do not know. For so much of my life I was teased about being such a bookworm that I must have read the whole library. Hah! If only those jokers knew how much more I have to learn!

Thank you so much for your comment, Sylvia. I hope you're right that reading them chronologically will help me understand the books' contexts. That was certainly my plan--although sometimes I wonder if going backwards from our world into the past might be enriching as well--taking us from what feels more familiar into the unfamiliar. The historian in me definitely makes me want to see things of a piece at least.

Although I've read a several contemporary books which have affected me profoundly, it is astonishing to me that almost every \"classic\" I've read has stayed with me and even become part of me. And as I plan to write about next week, the work that goes into the reading has something to do with the deep joy the texts bring, I think.

---
